A grilled Ham and Cheese sandwich is a staple for me on a cold day. Fortunately, here on the Crystal Coast of North Carolina, the cold is minimal and I have to make up an excuse to cook up an old time favorite.
The “perfect” Hot (I don’t call it grilled) Ham and Cheese is all about timing. Yes, timing.
First, if you are using an electric stove like I am, get your non-stick pan warmed up to about a 5. I usually let it warm up for about three minutes before putting that pan on the stove, then let that heat up for about three minutes. Use a touch of olive oil spray on the pan. Trust me.
Now, the prep. Yep, you are going to need to prep your sandwich.
1. Get two pieces of sliced Italian Bread. Walmart has a great selection and even day old works if you are cheap like me. Why pay $2.00 for a loaf of bread if its still good at $1.00 right?
2. You want to put a slice and a half of WHITE American Cheese on each size? Why white? Because orange cheese is freaking gross. I learned that from Kevin Owens. You are all welcome.
3. Then you want to put four and a half slices of Ham (your choice) on one side. Don’t just slap that on there. You are making art. Slice by slice.
4. Put the sandwich halves together. You then put some spreadable butter on one side. Place the sandwich, butter side down, in your hot pan now. You can put spreadable then on the half that doesn’t have butter. Note: If you are watching your weight, you probably don’t really read/watch this anyway, so use your butter to taste.
5. You are going to want to flip the sandwich after two minutes and go two minutes on the other side. TWO MINUTES.
6. After you got two minutes on each side, now decrease your heat to about a 2 and then go one minute on each side.
7. Put it on your plate and wait about a minute or two for the melted cheese to settle before cutting it into halves.
8. Add a pickle, chips, and a glass of Steve Corino’s NXTea and you are all set.
